In Nelson Tasman, stargazing is easy. From Mārahau and Kaiteriteri to New Zealand’s first Dark Sky Park at Wai-iti, you’re never far from a quiet beach, scenic lookout or countryside spot perfect for a night under the stars.
Just 40 minutes from of Nelson City, the Wai-iti Recreation Reserve and Tunnicliff Forest form Aotearoa’s first Dark Sky Park. It's an official title awarded by the International Dark-Sky Association, meaning the night sky here is internationally recognised as spectacularly clear, with minimal light pollution and pristine viewing conditions.
Nestled on public conservation land, the reserve is part of our region’s wider commitment to sustainability and environmental guardianship. On a clear night, the Milky Way stretches from one horizon to the other. It’s pure stargazing bliss.
From glamping tents and eco-retreats to freedom camping spots with knockout views, our region has plenty of ways to drift off beneath a starlit sky.
Start with golden hour drinks and stay for a starlit dinner.
