There’s plenty new to tuck into across our region this winter, with new openings, cosy dining spots and familiar favourites returning for the cooler months. The Moutere Inn begins a new chapter under local owners John and Jane, alongside acclaimed chef Alistair Forster, bringing evolving seasonal menus and genuine hospitality to the historic country pub. Over at Base Café, weekend roasts are back from June, best enjoyed beside the cosy fireplace with a tap beer or house wine in hand.
Closer to the coast, Parkside Tāhuna has opened at Tāhuna Beach Holiday Park, offering great coffee, homemade treats and an easy stop for beachgoers and campers alike. In Māpua, Elba’s Pazza Pizza is settling into its new permanent home after building a loyal following from the food truck, serving up wood fired pizzas and relaxed local vibes. Meanwhile in Stoke, Lantern Society is bringing comforting Asian inspired dishes and warm hospitality to the neighbourhood, with family recipes that span Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam and beyond.

Te Ramaroa returns from 3 to 7 July, lighting up our region with five magical nights of creativity, connection, and celebration. Bringing together families, friends, and visitors from near and far, the festival shines a spotlight on the community spirit, imagination, and local pride that make Nelson Tasman such a special place.

Anchored by Sublime Coffee Roasters Café, Bridge Street Studios brings together makers, designers, artisans, and small businesses under one roof. Part workshop, part gallery, and part neighbourhood hangout, it’s a creative space where ideas, craft, and community come together side by side. Pop in for a coffee, have a wander through the studios, and meet the locals keeping Nelson’s creative spirit thriving. Be sure to stop by Common Threads, a warm and welcoming fibre arts space where locals gather to knit, sew, crochet, learn new skills, and share the simple joy of making something by hand.

After nearly two decades of restoration work, kākā returned to Brook Waimārama Sanctuary for the first time in generations. Once common across Nelson, these charismatic native parrots have come home to a safer, predator controlled environment where they can thrive alongside flourishing populations of kiwi pukupuku, kākāriki karaka and other native wildlife. Join a guided tour to hear the story behind their return and experience this remarkable conservation success up close.

Winter’s a good excuse to get out, try something different and spend time with good people. Feel like singing? Head along to an open mic night. Thursdays at Red16 or Fridays at The Dog's Bone. Give it a crack yourself, or just settle in and enjoy the local talent.
If you’d rather swap pub nights for pedal power, winter’s shaping up to be a big one on the trails too.
