Arthor Maire Leadbeater will discuss her thought-provoking book, The Enemy Within, which outlines the history of state surveillance in Aotearoa over the last 100 years and its impact on activists.
Using archival material and released SIS files, Leadbeater argues that unaccountable intelligence agencies harm democracy and should be disbanded, with their duties transferred to the police.
Maire Leadbeater is a veteran peace and human rights activist and happily retired social worker.
Because both her parents were members of the Communist Party, from the age of 10, the SIS kept records of Maire’s activities
