Situated just 10 minutes from central Nelson in the Hira Forest, the Sharlands tracks run the length of the picturesque valley, featuring a range of easy fire road climbs and epic downhill trails.

Once you reach the top, you’ll find a series of hand-built descents including a continuous single-track route that spans 9km. If you’re looking for a grade 5 descent, the newly built Aorere trail is a true enduro trail that’s guaranteed to get the heart pumping.

This is also where you want to head if you favour downhill descents as it is the home to Broken Axe and Kaka DH trails.

The area is owned by Ngāti Koata and you must obtain a permit in order to ride here. Permits are included in your annual NMTBC membership, or you can purchase temporary 2-week permits for just $15.

How to get there: The Sharlands trails are accessible off the Maitai Valley Road in Nelson.
