Lake Rotoiti in the Nelson Lakes National Park is home to a selection of fascinating lakeside walks. Whether you have an hour, half a day or the whole day to explore the scenery that surrounds the glacial carved lake, you’ll want to make time to discover the famous Whisky Falls.

The gushing 40m high waterfall is a 5-hour return walk along the lakes edge through manuka, kanuka and beech forest, but can also be accessed by catching a boat to a nearby jetty, then taking a 15 minute stroll up to the falls. Thundering from a great height, a rocky viewpoint to the left of the falls provides the perfect platform to observe the spectacular beauty of the waterfall.

How to get there: The walk to Whisky Falls begins at the Lakeside Track on Mount Robert Road, in the alpine village of St Arnaud.
