Broadgreen Samuels Rose Garden

The Samuels Rose Garden was established in 1868 and currently contains over 3000 plants, including the Slaters Crimson China Rose.

Interestingly, early European settlers bought their favourite roses with them because roses are only native to the Northern Hemisphere, and the Slaters Crimson China Rose was the first variety of rose grown in New Zealand.

The rose walk is open all year round, and takes in every corner of this spectacular setting, whilst the annual ‘Among The Roses’ event celebrates the gardens when they come into full bloom. Also on the grounds is one of Nelson’s oldest residential buildings, now restored and furnished as a museum. Dating back to the Victorian and Edwardian eras, a tour of the Broadgreen Historic House and a short stroll through the rose garden promises a unique and insightful experience.
