The NZ Antique & Classic Boatshow is a beloved annual event where beautifully restored vintage boats take centre stage on the stunning waters of Lake Rotoiti, celebrating craftsmanship, history, and good old Kiwi ingenuity.
In the stunning setting of Lake Rotoiti in Nelson Lakes National Park, the NZ Antique & Classic Boatshow is a celebration of great boats and even better company. The show now has an international following of those who love the fine lines of a classic craft — whether it's a sleek Italian motorboat or a weathered Kauri clinker.
The event continues to grow each year, both in the number and quality of craft on display and in the crowds who come to enjoy the boats and the buzz on the lake. Races cater to everything from jet boats to rowing skiffs, with the quirky Le Mans-style beach start for the Seagull dinghy race always drawing a laugh.
Judging takes place on Saturday, ahead of an evening awards ceremony at the Alpine Lodge. The coveted Jens Hansen Trophy is up for grabs, with judges looking for more than just good looks — history, craftsmanship and a boat with a story all count.
Other awards include best new restoration, best steamboat, best jet-propelled craft, and best themed display, as well as prizes for the various race winners.
All boats will be checked for noxious aquatic weeds and oil leaks before hitting the water. Boaties are reminded to do their bit to help stop the spread of didymo. And one more thing — DOC has released kiwi into the nearby area, so no antique or classic dogs, please!
