You don’t often see a gravel bike tackling the Old Ghost Road. At 85km long and packed with rugged, remote singletrack, it’s usually the playground of mountain bikers and hardy hikers. But Kim Gintrand rolled up with a grin, a sense of adventure, and a gravel bike that was about to get the ride of its life.
Kim and Kilian were deep into their two-month roam around Aotearoa—chasing trails, ticking off hikes, and spinning through some of the most jaw-dropping landscapes you’ll ever lay eyes on. Kilian even snagged a 3rd place finish at the NZ MTB Rally.
But, like all the best yarns, the real gem was still waiting down the track.
After chatting with a few locals (as you do), they heard whispers of a trail that was wild, remote, and absolutely magic. Winding from Lyell to Seddonville through tussock tops, native forest, swing bridges and ghost towns, the Old Ghost Road isn’t just a ride—it’s a journey back in time.
Despite the gravel bike not being the “right” tool for the job, it turns out heart and hustle count for more than suspension.
We won’t give too much away—because Kim and Killian filmed the whole ride. From bone-rattling descents to misty ridgelines, it’s a proper adventure in our neck of the woods.

"During my time in New Zealand, exploring the gravel trails of Nelson Tasman was without a doubt one of the absolute highlights. The region’s wild and untouched beauty made every ride feel like an adventure, especially with the sun almost always shining. I loved the constant contrast between the proximity of the ocean and the rolling hills, it truly felt like riding through another world. I also loved the vibe in Nelson itself, with its strong cycling community and amazing coffee shops, perfect for recovering after a long day on the bike. Gravel riding here felt like discovering a hidden gem—wild, welcoming, and unforgettable."
