Stretch the legs on Tākaka Hill

Kick things off with a leg-stretcher up Tākaka Hill. It’s a winding drive with jaw-dropping views. Once you're over the top, make a detour to Harwoods Hole. The short bush walk through ancient beech forest ends at one of the deepest vertical shafts in New Zealand. If you're up for it, Via Ferrata offers a thrilling climb with epic views. You can rent the gear from Ngarua Caves.

Café culture and blue springs

Drop into the iconic Wholemeal Café in Tākaka for lunch. It’s a quirky spot full of charm and fresh, wholesome bites. After lunch, swing by your accommodation and settle in. Whether you’re glamping under the stars, tucking into a luxury lodge, or kicking back in a beach-view cabin, there’s no shortage of places that let you soak up the scenery in style. Then take a short drive to Te Waikoropupū Springs. The water here is some of the clearest on the planet, and it’s a peaceful, sacred spot with a stunning loop walk.

A full day exploring with Farewell Spit Tours

Before heading north, grab breakfast at the Courthouse Café in Collingwood. It’s a laid-back local gem where the coffee is strong and the baking is top-notch.

A one-minute walk takes you to Farewell Spit Tours, where you can jump on a guided tour out along the shifting sands of Farewell Spit. You’ll explore wetlands, massive dunes, and the famous lighthouse. Muffins and hot drinks are included, and if you’re out there over lunch, the team can sort a picnic for a little extra. It’s an unforgettable deep dive into one of New Zealand’s most unique landscapes.

After a big day exploring, treat yourself to dinner at Rust. This stylish eatery blends seasonal local flavours with warm service. A great spot to reflect on your day and soak up the relaxed Golden Bay pace.

Morning paddles or cruising the coast

Start your day on the water. Golden Bay Kayaks offer guided or self-guided trips that reveal hidden caves, beaches, and marine life. Prefer a cruisier option? Book a scenic cruise from Tōtaranui, a 45-minute drive from Pōhara, into Abel Tasman National Park. Jump off at Anchorage for the Pitt Head Loop walk or at Awaroa Lodge for a long lunch in paradise.

Molly B’s and mini adventures

Refuel at Molly B’s in Tākaka. The coffee’s spot-on and the cabinet food hits the mark. If you’re still up for a wander, check out Labyrinth Rocks or The Grove. Both offer quick, quirky walks through limestone formations and native bush.

Or just take it slow

Not every day needs to be jam-packed. If you're feeling mellow, spend the day pottering around Tākaka’s art galleries, shops, and bakeries. Or just find a beach, roll out a towel, and let time slow down.

Beach time and brunch

There’s no rush today. Hit the sand early or take one last stroll along the coast. Find a local café to grab brunch, some of the best eats are tucked away in small settlements, so keep your eyes peeled.

Scenic stop in Motueka

If you’re heading back towards Nelson, make time for a stop in Motueka. TOAD Hall is a solid choice for something fresh and tasty, plus there’s plenty of space to stretch out before the final leg of the drive back to Nelson.
