Find your own way to our region’s most famous rock

You have probably seen the photos. A perfectly split granite boulder sitting just off the golden sands of Kaiteriteri. But the real magic of Toka Ngawhā (Split Apple Rock) is not just what it looks like, it is how you get there. Paddle in at sunrise in a waka, cruise over with a skipper, or walk the coast track and stumble across it like you have discovered it yourself.

Here are five ways to visit this iconic spot.

Cruise across in style

Hop aboard with Abel Tasman Sea Shuttles or Wilsons Abel Tasman and cruise along the coastline with a local skipper who knows every cove and tide. Prefer wind in your sails. Join Abel Tasman Sailing Adventures for a relaxed day on the water, or hire a private charter with Abel Tasman Charters for something more personal. However you float, you will pull up close in effortless style.

Paddle out by waka

There is something special about approaching Toka Ngawhā the traditional way. Waka Abel Tasman offers guided cultural journeys that connect you to the stories of Te Tai-o-Aorere (Tasman Bay) and the surrounding coastline. It is more than a visit. It is an experience grounded in history, community, and respect for the moana that shapes our region.

Rent a kayak

If you are keen to set your own pace, hire a kayak in Mārahau or Kaiteriteri and head out under your own steam. The paddle from both beaches is achievable for most, especially on a calm, glassy morning. Circle the rock, drift close enough to feel its scale, then pull into a quiet stretch of sand and linger as long as you like.
