This exhibition, created by Ngāti Rārua, honours their legacy by sharing the iwi's story through their own lens – interweaving personal histories and key historical events that shaped their journey from their early settlement in Motueka to the modern-day Treaty of Waitangi settlement process.
Dr Lorraine Eade, exhibition curator and researcher at the Tokomaru Research Centre, shares “This exhibition is about telling the independent history of Ngāti Rārua – the stories of our tūpuna who endured significant breaches of Te Tiriti since 1840 yet remained resolute in protecting our lands and our people. It’s also about acknowledging the relationships that sustained us and honouring the legacy of those who came before us.”
