Romantic Melody
Franz Schubert and Robert Schumann. Both were masters in the art of melodic writing, and both suffered with debilitating mental illness. Schubert helped redefine Austrian music in the shadow of Mozart, Schumann took Beethoven’s German expressivity to new heights.
Neither composer had the cello in mind when they wrote this music. We don’t think they will mind.
Cellist James Donaldson and Kyoko Takashima perform:
Schubert: Sonata for Arpeggione and Cello
Schumann: Fantasiestücke Op.73
