Experience George’s War: Following My Father’s Journey, an intimate exhibition by local artist Sue Heydon, as she explores her father’s harrowing journey as a WWII prisoner of war.

Captured during the 1941 Greek campaign, George Heydon spent over four years in POW camps, enduring immense deprivation and confinement.

Through a blend of personal exploration and extensive research, Sue Heydon brings to life her father’s untold story, revealing the silent suffering, resilience, and emotional toll of war. This exhibition not only uncovers her father’s struggles but also honours the broader experiences of more than 8,000 New Zealand soldiers who shared similar hardships as prisoners of war during WWII.

Heydon’s work fuses history and art, using creative expression to connect with her father’s past. George’s War: Following My Father’s Journey is a raw and powerful reflection on the cost of war, a celebration of the human spirit, and a daughter’s quest to bring her father’s painful history to light.
