A Night in the Forest - Guided Tour

Discover the magic of the ngahere at night on this unforgettable 75-minute guided experience at the Brook Waimārama Sanctuary.

Your journey begins at the Sanctuary Visitor Centre for a briefing and introduction about the sanctuary and the mahi. Our friendly, knowledgeable guides will welcome you, introduce the Sanctuary, and then lead you deep into the forest. Under the cover of darkness you’ll walk under towering trees, hear the rustling of nocturnal wildlife, and feel the forest awaken. Listen for the haunting call of ruru — and if you’re lucky, the call of kiwi pukupuku. Along the way, you’ll encounter the magical bioluminescent glow of our resident glowworms — a truly enchanting sight.

This unique night-time experience is limited to just 10-12 guests per tour, with two guides leading each group.

Tour fees directly support our ongoing restoration and development of this unique environment and ecosystem, helping to fund vital conservation activities and initiatives.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Will I see kiwi on tour?
While the Brook Waimārama Sanctuary is now home to kiwi pukupuku (little spotted kiwi), they are very shy. You may be lucky enough to hear their calls during night tours, but sightings are rare and never guaranteed. Their elusive nature is part of what makes hearing them so special!

Is there much walking involved?
The tour involves walking up to 1.5 km along gravel tracks, boardwalks, and gentle slopes. Visibility is low at night, so each participant will be provided with a red handheld torch to help navigate the path.

Will we see glowworms on the night tour?
Absolutely, Glowworms are commonly seen on our night tours, especially in the right conditions. Our guides know the best spots, and visitors will get to see their magical glow.

What can I expect on the night tour?
This 75-minute guided experience takes you deep into the Sanctuary after dark. You’ll walk under the stars, hear the gentle sounds of the forest, and may see glowworms twinkling along the banks and trees. If you’re lucky, you might even hear kiwi calling in the distance.

Do I need to bring my own torch?
No, a red-light torch will be provided at the visitor centre before departing into the Sanctuary
