If you’re after an easy wander that still feels like a proper escape, the Maitai Caves walk is a bit of a local gem.

On this 10.5km return track, you’ll cruise along a mostly flat track that winds through beautiful mature beech and podocarp forest, the kind that makes you slow down and take it all in.

The path’s well formed the whole way, so your everyday sneakers will do the trick. It stays nice and gentle underfoot until the final push, where there’s a short climb of about ten minutes to reach the limestone caves. Just enough to get the legs working before you’re rewarded at the top.

If you’re keen to mix it up, the section to the Dun Mountain turn-off is also suitable for mountain biking.
