The 33rd South Island Chess Championships come to Nelson for only the third time, welcoming players of all levels and ages.

Format: 8-round Swiss, 90 minutes + 30 seconds increment
Prize fund: Guaranteed $1,000
Entry fees: $120 Adults, $100 Juniors (under 20)

This is one of New Zealand's premier annual chess events. Around 700 tournament games will be played over the 4 days, bringing together players from many of the country's 45 chess clubs. The tournament is NZCF and FIDE rated.

Each evening, a video mapping projection on the façade of the Rutherford Hotel will showcase the history of the Nelson Chess Club, the best game of the day, and other Championship highlights.
