Step into the creative world of clay at the Motueka Pottery Club during Nelson Clay Week 2026.
On Saturday 3 October come and watch the ancient Japanese technique of Raku firing. Watch as club members remove pieces from the red hot kiln. Some have hair added while extremely hot, which instantly burns upon contact, leaving behind delicate, smoky black carbon lines. Other pieces are placed in a material that would be able to catch fire, such as sawdust or newspaper. This technique is used to starve the piece of oxygen, which creates a myriad of colours within the glaze.
Raku firing creates completely unique pieces as there is never a certainty as to how the final piece will turn out.
Take a look at the club rooms, or get the kids having a go with Play with Clay. There will be a selection of ceramic works will be available for purchase, offering the chance to take home a unique handmade piece created in Motueka.
Whether you already love ceramics or are simply curious to discover something new during Nelson Clay Week, everyone is welcome to enjoy this relaxed and friendly creative space and celebrate the rich clay culture of our region.
