“Knocking on Doors” is Peter Assaf’s story. Peter was among the few non-British immigrants who arrived in Motueka in the 1950s and became deeply woven into the town’s life.

In 1950, at 21, Peter Assaf left Lebanon and sailed to New Zealand, a country he had only heard described as ‘the land of milk and honey.’ As the only son, he joined his father, Joseph whom he barely knew, in Motueka’s family business, Assaf’s Fashions. What began generations earlier with clothing sold on foot and by horse and cart in Christchurch, grew into a High Street landmark through Peter’s dedication.

In honour of Peter’s life and legacy, his daughters invite you to join them in conversation at the book launch at Motueka Library.
