Parihaka day commemorates one of the most significant days in Aotearoa NZ history when the leaders and people of Parihaka chose to embrace non violence and peace when faced with injustice and violence over land possession. On November 5th,1881 they sat in stillness and peace on their marae while NZ Armed Forces including volunteers from the Nelson rifles invaded their settlement. Children skipped and offered bread to the soldiers. No one died in the conflict.
This set a footprint and a pathway of peace and reconciliation for us all, for all the world.
The Dawn Blessing is a time to set aside to acknowledge, remember and honour Tohu Kākahi, Te Whiti-o-Rongomai and the generations of people of Parihaka who have faithfully brought their Legacy of Peace into our time. Tohu Kākahi and Te Whiti-o-Rongomai were exiled under house arrest in Nelson Whakatū for close to 8 months following the invasion.
There will be karakia, prayers, waiata or hymns, kōrero, reflection and thoughts for the blessing of peace in Whakatū.
All are welcome to attend and participate.
Carrying forward a Legacy of Peace is the greatest treasure we can bring to our children and mokopuna.
Parakuihi/Breakfast to follow at the Nelson Bridge Club
