James Butterwick, an expert on Russian and Ukrainian avant-garde painters, will present an illustrated lecture on the Ukrainian artist, Oleksandr Bohomazov (1880-1930), to the Nelson Decorative and Fine Arts Society. James will examine the legacy of Bohomazov, who many consider the national artist of Ukraine, and he will consider how his work is finally gaining international recognition. This Kyiv-based artist, who never left the Russian or Soviet empires, could only have heard about the new trends in Western Art through magazines or publications. Despite this, he managed to create masterpieces which were no less exceptional or ground-breaking than those of his European contemporaries. Bohomazov was an artist of revolutionary ideas and unique style, whose difficult, at times tragic, life was shaped by a passionate love story on a background of historical upheaval.
