Aotearoa’s giant flightless night parrot is having its biggest breeding season on record, and more than 100 chicks have hatched. The thrilling story of how kākāpō have been rescued from the brink of extinction is a rollercoaster ride of eggs and chicks, births and deaths, and ground-breaking conservation work. We will also explore the behind-the-scenes data, technology and day-to-day systems used to monitor and manage kākāpō.

Come and join Alison Ballance (MNZM) and Polina Stucke (DOC Kākāpō Takahē Biodiversity Team) for history of the program, an update on the latest developments on the islands and the science behind it. Plus a chance to ask questions - and a few fluffy photos!

Alison Ballance (MNZM) is a zoologist, writer, wildlife film-maker and radio presenter. If she was to choose a mastermind topic it would be kākāpō, which she has been involved with for more than 30 years. She has written an award-winning book about kākāpō, made a TV documentary, and is currently producing the second season of the popular RNZ podcast series the Kākāpō Files.

Polina Stucke is the Kākāpō Team's science technician, focusing on data management, analysis, and the systems used to monitor birds and support decision-making. Her work involves bringing together different data sources and helping turn them into something useful for the team on the ground.
