In 1977, Sir Edmund Hillary led one of his most extraordinary adventures, Ocean to Sky. a journey by jet boat up India’s sacred Ganges River from the ocean to its Himalayan source. For the people of India, it was a pilgrimage led by a hero; for Hillary and his son Peter, it was a personal journey of healing after family tragedy.
Travelling aboard New Zealand’s iconic Hamilton Jet Boats, the team navigated the river’s tiger-filled delta, vast floodplains and treacherous mountain gorges. Near the Ganges’ snowy source, the unthinkable happened, Hillary himself was struck by life-threatening altitude sickness, leading to one of the most dramatic rescues of his career.
