Flood Risk in the Motueka Catchment: A Practical Community Workshop

The Motueka Catchment Collective (MCC) warmly invites you to attend a community workshop to better understand and discuss flood risk in the Motueka Catchment, and ways people and communities can live more safely alongside our rivers. This event is open to all and will also be relevant to those living outside the catchment.

The workshop will:

- Share the latest flood risk research to help people make informed choices. This includes our guest speaker, Dr Emily Lane, Principal Scientist – Earth Sciences (formerly NIWA), who will speak about changing flood risk across the country and in the Motueka Catchment; what we can expect to see and experience in the coming years; new flood risk mapping based on different climate change scenarios; and recent work to help other flood‑affected communities better prepare — and how this may be relevant locally.

- Discuss and share local experiences and perspectives of flooding. Local knowledge is essential in developing sound and realistic approaches to reducing flood risk, and last year’s floods remain a very recent experience for many people, with impacts still being felt. This experience matters and should not be forgotten.

- Provide an overview of different approaches to flood risk management — from small, practical local actions (such as building‑level changes, drainage and access planning, increased riparian planting, and preparedness), to river management, land‑use planning, and infrastructure decisions.

- Include interactive workshop sessions using scenarios to explore practical steps at the household and farm level, and how these connect to broader investment, planning, and system‑level decisions by organisations, agencies, and decision‑makers to reduce flood risk over time.

The workshop is free, open to all, and lunch will be provided.
