Annette has written a beautifully crafted and illustrated book on all you would want to know about Rotoiti’s natural and social history, interwoven with her life spent “Up the Lake”.

Annette spent her early career with the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research in Nelson and later in Auckland. However, most of her career was spent overseas working in Western Samoa and Switzerland, and the last 13 years were spent working at the Natural History Museum in London. Her speciality was naming insects, and at the Natural History Museum, she worked on a group of parasitic wasps that attack caterpillars. She became assistant director of the International Institute of Entomology in the UK, which took her to many parts of the world, including Africa and Asia.

Annette’s heart has always remained at Rotoiti, where she built her own bach and where the essence of an idea about writing a book on Rotoiti developed. After retirement, she returned to live permanently in New Zealand where she has settled in Māpua, but continues to spend time “Up the Lake”.
