A rugged Golden Bay classic for experienced mountain bikers, the Historic Kill Devil Track serves up a serious climb, technical riding and big views across the Lockett Range.
This is one for riders who like to earn their views. The Historic Kill Devil Track is a challenging 44 km return ride in Golden Bay, climbing around 1,820 metres and winding its way uphill through 58 switchbacks.
The track starts from Uruwhenua Road, around 17 km south of Tākaka. From the parking area, follow the gravel road through farmland and into a forestry block, then sign the intention book before the farm road narrows into single track and the real adventure begins.
From Camp Creek to Skeet Creek, the track follows a former stock route, with mostly benched riding and a rocky base as it climbs towards the Lockett Range. Higher up, the riding gets rougher and more technical, with rocky sections, steep gradients and stretches of smoother packed dirt along the ridgeline.
The effort is rewarded with wide-open views from the tops, plus a real sense of remoteness as the track passes historic huts and shelters. Riordans Hut is a basic three-bunk hut, while Waingaro Forks Hut sits deeper along the route for riders continuing beyond Skeet Creek.
This is a demanding backcountry ride best suited to experienced mountain bikers with a high level of fitness and solid technical skills. Come prepared for a big day out, changing conditions and a proper Golden Bay adventure.
