Sponsor a penguin nesting box with Mohua Penguin Trust
The Mohua Penguin Trust was formed to preserve, protect and enhance the population of Little Blue Penguins also known as Koroā and their habitat in Mohua Golden Bay.
At about 40 centimeters in height, the Kororā is the smallest penguin in the world, only found in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand. Sadly their numbers are declining.
Protecting the Koroā in Golden Bay is a community effort. Local volunteers donate their time to build and place nest boxes, set and monitor trap lines to reduce predators such as rats, and maintain the vegetation around known nesting sites.
If you contact the Mohua Penguin Trust prior to visiting Golden Bay, there may be opportunities to take part in their volunteer activities. Alternatively, donations to sponsor a penguin nesting box or rat trap and tunnel would be greatly appreciated.
