Nelson Tasman is an extraordinary place to live, work, play and visit and we want to keep it that way, so that future generations can continue to enjoy the stunning natural landscapes that surround us. As such, there are rules around freedom camping that travellers need to be aware of, such as the importance of leaving nothing but footprints, and taking nothing but memories.

The region is home to a variety of accommodation options for visitors to choose from, but if something a little more casual is your style, there are also plenty of holiday parks and campgrounds offering all the amenities you need for an overnight stay.

Freedom camping is defined as camping in locations without specific camping facilities such as toilets, showers and cooking. Although not encouraged, there are certain locations around Nelson Tasman where freedom camping is available.

In the spirit of Kaitiakitanga (guardianship), we ask that you travel responsibly, respect the environment and plan a holiday that is committed to leaving no trace when you leave.

Please read the Nelson City Council and Tasman District Council website information pages to find out more about camping and freedom camping around the region, browse our alternate accommodation options, or see the friendly staff at one of our Visitor Information Centres for assistance.
