Celebrate the Māori New Year
Activities vary each year, but past Matariki celebrations have included everything from Māori kai and entertainment to kids’ activities and cultural experiences.
More than 10,000 people attended Whakatū Nelson's 2024 Matariki Festival at Trafalgar Park.
In Whakatū Nelson, Te Huihui-o-Matariki has become a cornerstone of the season. Held at Trafalgar Park, this vibrant night of celebration features Te Mākete Pō, a buzzing night market with over 60 stalls offering traditional and modern Māori kai, handmade taonga, and cultural arts. The park is lit up with stunning light art installations, while local performers and renowned artists like Maisey Rika and Rei take the stage, creating an atmosphere that’s full of warmth, pride, and aroha.
