International students enrich communities across the top of the South Island by bringing diverse perspectives, cultures and global connections. Their presence strengthens educational institutions, supports workforce development and enhances the vibrancy of local communities.

Nationally, international education continues to be one of New Zealand's most valuable export sectors. According to Stats NZ data, international education-related exports reached $4.52 billion in the year ending September 2025, up from $3.6 billion in the year ending December 2024.

A recent 2025 Nelson Tasman International Education Impact Report found that 1,135 international students studied in the Nelson Tasman region during 2024. Their presence generated an estimated $34.5 million contribution to regional GDP and supported 249 jobs across the region.

The Te Tauihu o Te Waka a Māui International Student Excellence Awards were established to recognise the achievements of international students and acknowledge the many schools, tertiary institutions, host families, organisations and community members who help make the top of the South Island a welcoming and supportive place to study.
