The Nelson Regional Development Agency (NRDA) has launched free ambassador training workshops for visitor-facing workers in the Nelson Tasman region.

Visitor ambassadors play a crucial role in enriching tourists' experiences by confidently and knowledgeably sharing the region's attractions, services, and businesses. The NRDA's 'Local Ambassador' programme focuses on helping visitors explore and appreciate Nelson Tasman more deeply. The workshops aim to boost the local economy by enhancing visitor experiences through extended stays and increased activities

Participants will connect with visitors through 'manaakitanga' (hospitality) and 'kaitiakitanga' (caring for the environment). They will network amongst peers, learn local stories, and take home valuable materials and contacts. Participants will also receive invitations to future events, deals, and discounts for local experiences.

Further workshops will be available as part of NRDA’s ongoing commitment to empower and educate our visitor facing employees and businesses.

Craig Boodee, Visitor Destination Lead at NRDA, says,

"We want participants to enjoy learning about our region, from Te Reo Māori pronunciation to visitor behaviour and spending patterns. Enhanced guest experiences lead to repeat visits and positive word-of-mouth recommendations. Over 107 people have attended the workshops so far, from 150 registrations. We would like to double this number, build local knowledge and have real impact in our coming visitor season”.

Francois Durand, a barista at Ruby’s Espresso, shared his experience:

"The day after attending the Local Ambassador Workshop, I interacted with visitors from Queenstown. I shared information about our region's MTB rating and local trails, and they ended up spending more than the average customer and left a 5-star review on Google!"

Fiona Wilson, CE of NRDA, adds,

"By encouraging visitors to stay one more night the local economy could gain an additional $63 million per year(*Source). Many residents are already informal ambassadors, and these workshops, designed with industry input and supported by Government MBIE funding, aim to expand and strengthen these roles as part of our region’s manaakitanga. Our call out to businesses and interested community members is to join us in making Nelson Tasman the premier destination for visitors and sign up for a Local Ambassador workshop.”
