- Cycle Trails & Mountainbike Parks
Set amongst lush native beech forest deep in the Wairoa Valley, The Wairoa Gorge is home to over 70km of hand-built mountain-bike trails. Mixing back country riding with bike park convenience, the Gorge contains 40+ tracks across grades 2-5.
The Gorge is a recreation reserve owned by New Zealander’s, after it was gifted to the Department of Conservation by an American billionaire in 2019. Everyone is welcome to visit The Gorge, but must first sign up as a member of the Nelson Mountain Bike Club and pre-book their shuttle day - it’s really quick and easy to join.
With tracks named Jumanji and Slippery Weka, the focus of the park is to enjoy the downhills. As such, they have a regular shuttle bus that can take you up the hill, with private shuttles available too. It’s totally up to you how you spend your day in the park – take it slow and enjoy the scenery and waterfalls on the way down, or bump up the adrenaline and squeeze in as many laps as you can.
How to get there: The mountainbike park is located 30 minutes outside of Wakefield, and can be accessed via shuttle from the carpark at the end of Old Mill Road. For more information and to book your shuttle day visit https://www.thegorge.nz/
