Locals in Nelson Tasman often consider Autumn the best time of year – the weather is settled, the sea is still warm enough to swim in, there are still plenty of events and festivals on offer, and all of the outdoor summer attractions are still in full swing. There’s something particularly extraordinary about dining alfresco as the sun sets over Tasman Bay, exploring the Abel Tasman as the leaves are turning golden, skydiving on a crisp and cloudless day or sampling world class wines during harvesting season.
Nelson Tasman locals and people from all around New Zealand have a deep love for Takaka and Golden Bay, and it’s easy to see why. There’s something for the whole family to enjoy, from visiting the migratory birds at Farewell Spit, to riding horseback along Puponga Beach, to exploring Lord of the Rings film locations by helicopter. There are a range of foodie havens to choose from, including the internationally-famous Mussel Inn and many accommodation providers who can offer you some much needed R&R. It’s no wonder locals never want to leave, and visitors keep returning year after year.
Nelson Tasman is surprisingly diverse and nowhere is that more evident than in the range of events our region hosts every year. Whether you choose to challenge yourself in the sporting realm, tantalise your tastebuds in the craft brewing capital of New Zealand, savour an array of delicious local cuisine, sit back and enjoy quirky performances or stroll through an illuminated utopia of light installations, Nelson Tasman has the event for you this season.

Nelson Tasman is synonymous with light and it's the quality of light in Autumn & Winter that makes us special. But it's not only natural light that illuminates Nelson Tasman in the middle of the year. Light Nelson is a free 4-day event in which you can take an evening stroll through an illuminated utopia of light installations, with everything from delicate twinkling lights to massive projections on the side of buildings. It's the perfect excuse to get rugged up and be awed, delighted and enchanted by more than 70 installations. To find out more, visit their website.
