New Zealand’s smallest but most popular national park, the Abel Tasman is a truly remarkable place to tick off the bucket list. Able to be experienced at your own pace, the ease of accessibility of the park means that you can choose from short single day trips to indulgent multi-day adventures.
Your morning will consist of a kayaking trip around the bay toward Split Apple Rock, your paddle gliding seamlessly through the calm waters below, as you revel in the breath-taking beauty of the sweeping coastline and listen to the urban myths of how this iconic landmark was formed. Toes back in the golden sands of Kaiteriteri beach, you’ll head up to Kimi Ora Eco Resort for an afternoon of luxury. A day pass will give you access to the indoor and outdoor heated swimming pools, the spa, sauna and steam room, whilst a few hours at the day spa for a facial or massage will leave you feeling relaxed and rejuvenated and like you’re truly on holiday.
The evening calls for a meal on the waterfront, dining alfresco as the sun recedes into the horizon, marking the end of your first day in paradise. The next morning, watch from your beachfront balcony as the new day dawns, the glistening sun rays reflecting off the water of the sheltered bay that lay before you. Riding top deck on a scenic cruise out to Anchorage, or on board an eco tour from Marahau, you’ll get to experience more of the parks famed natural beauty and abundant wildlife, before taking a stroll along the coastal track toward Cleopatras Pools. Here, nestled amongst the lush native bush you’ll find a moss lined waterslide and deep rock pools perfect for cooling off after a morning stroll. As you cross the Falls River swing bridge and descend into Bark Bay, spend some time relaxing on the golden sandy beach before continuing by boat up the park to Awaroa.
The beach at Awaroa was purchased by New Zealanders for New Zealanders in an ambitious crowdfunding campaign back in 2016 and, situated in the heart of the park, is the perfect place to spend the rest of your day. Relax for the evening at one of the beachfront lodges offering delicious homecooked meals and all the modern comforts, before awakening the next day for a scenic helicopter trip departing from the Awaroa airstrip. As you rise into the sky, you’ll realise that the park still has so much beauty yet to be discovered, hovering above sheltered bays, rocky outcrops and outlying islands. Your private helicopter will return you to the Motueka Aerodrome, and from here you may choose to relax at Toad Hall with some delicious local fare, and a tasting platter of craft beer from the on-site brewery, or continue on your adventures with a scenic skydive at the Aerodrome.
