Te Tauihu Intergenerational Strategy well underway

Te Tauihu Intergenerational Strategy well underway

Posted on Friday 30 August 2019

He waka eke noa - we are in this waka together.

The Te Tauihu Intergenerational Strategy is a new way of thinking about and approaching regional development, so it's easier to work and plan together across Te Tauihu – Tasman, Nelson and Marlborough. It's about enabling longer term planning, connecting our decision making and unlocking the potential in our communities for the benefit of our people, our land and our future.

The initiative is led by Wakatū Incorporation in partnership with all three councils, Nelson Regional Development Agency, the business community, NMIT, and whānau, hapū, and iwi across Te Tauihu. It is backed by investment from the Government’s Provincial Growth Fund, aimed at accelerating regional economic development.

This is a first for Te Tauihu. Never before have we come together to develop a shared strategy for the combined region.

The Nelson Regional Development Agency's Chief Executive Mark Rawson and Economic Development Projects and Insights Programme Manager Lesley McQue are both members of the Programme Management Group which provides cross-regional input to the overall programme. Lesley has been seconded full-time to Wakatū Incorporation to shape the Data Project, with support from her opposite number Alistair Schorn of Marlborough District Council, which will underpin the work. Lesley is also providing programme support behind the scenes.

What will come out of this?

A strategy document outlining the vision, priority areas and roadmap for the future will be completed by Christmas 2019. It will be informed by robust data and evidence and will be advised by internationally recognised experts in wellbeing and economic development.

The focus for July and August was on stakeholder engagement to gather ideas and feedback from the whole community. Over 20 live events took place across the region – from Mohua Golden Bay to Waikawa Picton, with over 1000 participants and tens of thousands reached through live streaming on social media. The response has exceeded our expectations, demonstrating how important this strategy is for the region.

Coming up next is a Youth Summit on September 1st, which is all about creating a youth-led opportunity to shape the vision for the future and discuss how we can create positive change for communities across Te Tauihu and ensure that every young person in this region sees a future for themselves here.

There will be further specific engagement events for iwi and businesses over the coming weeks.
