Nelson Tasman is a place of surprising diversity. While people often come for the stunning natural landscapes, inspiring arts and artisan produce that we are most well-known for, there is also a thriving clever business community, making its mark on the world stage. Think the world’s best-loved peanut butter, Australasia’s largest fishing port, the only place in NZ to grow hops on a commercial scale, NZ’s largest independent science organisation and many world-leading software development companies.

The Nelson Tasman Summer Intern programme offers you the opportunity to discover many of these businesses – giving you exposure and access to the region’s largest employers and senior staff. While the programme includes a variety of roles across a diverse range of businesses, what makes it special is that all interns will take part in a wider social and development programme. Interns will get to know and network with all the businesses taking part, develop their skills in areas such as agile methodology and business partnering, and be surrounded by a support network of their intern peers.

The programme is designed so that the interns are employed by individual organisations across the region and then come together as a group for a professional development and social programme. This allows the interns to experience and gain understanding of the range of clever businesses in the region while also enhancing your experience by sharing it with others.

The employment period can be variable based on your study dates. However they usually start mid November and finish early-late February.

Every Friday (apart from a 2-3 week break over the Christmas holiday period) the interns will come together for a half day joint development session at different organisations around the region. Examples of previous sessions include:

  • The history and establishment of Wakatū Incorporation, the Māori economy
  • An agile training session at Cawthron Institute
  • A tour of the Sealord factory and new fishing vessel, Tokatu, as well as a session on Business Partnering
  • A factory tour at New Zealand King Salmon and Pic's Peanut Butter World
  • A career panel discussion facilitated by Intepeople
  • A mini-Hackathon session at Datacom
  • A wrap-up session at the Nelson Regional Development Agency where the interns each gave a presentation about their summer experience and what they have learnt.

To enhance the Summer Internship and as part of the programme we organise a series of social events including:

  • Welcome event – once all interns have begun for the year (usually end of November) we put on food and drinks and welcome packs
  • Closing event
  • Other events have included Christmas drinks, Quiz nights and linking the interns to the Nelson Young Professionals

During the summer, the interns can also take part in a group project. We encourage this as it provides development of teamwork across organisations, innovation and leadership skills. A final decision on any group work would be made based on participating organisations.

Our 2019/20 interns created two promotional videos – one for the Summer intern programme (watch here) and one about the Nelson Tasman region as a place to live, work and play (watch here).

Get the most out of your summer by learning valuable skills while getting paid for it.

I enjoyed all of it, the background stories and values of each company were inspiring. The take-homes were appreciated and memorable. Making connections, increasing my network ticked all the boxes.
