Join us for a guided tour at the Sanctuary! This event is open to anyone interested in identifying birds by sight and sound. Brook Sanctuary Guided Tours reveal the hidden valleys of Waimārama. Discover for yourself what makes this Sanctuary unique – even the most knowledgeable visitors are surprised by what they learn from one of our expert guides.
Your guided tour/walk starts at the Sanctuary Visitor Centre where our friendly guide will meet you. All guides have a wealth of knowledge about the Sanctuary, its special features and stories. After introductions and an overview of the Brook Waimārama Sanctuary, you’ll be on your way. Expect the tour to take 60-90 minutes.
If you’re lucky, you might see or hear some of our newer residents – tīeke (South Island saddleback) which were released into the Sanctuary April 2021, or kākāriki karaka (orange-fronted parakeets) which were released into the Sanctuary late 2021/early 2022.
The tour will cover the history of the Sanctuary, including its pre-European history as a source of food and medicinal plants for local Maori people, its more recent history since the arrival of European settlers to Nelson (and the mammalian predators they brought with them), and the flora and fauna found within the Sanctuary.
If you have any questions about this tour that you would like answered before booking, please email info@brooksanctuary.org.nz
$30 for Nelson/Tasman locals. Conservation is at the heart of the Sanctuary; the admission prices we charge go directly into our efforts to restore and develop this special environment/ecosystem – the entry fees paid by visitors support everything we do.
