Explore and Celebrate the Mahitahi/Maitai: POSTPONED

New date to be confirmed - check the Facebook event for latest update.
Come explore the rich history of the Maitai/Maitahi/Mahitahi valley and celebrate the conservation achievements under the Jobs for Nature funding of Project Mahitahi, which is helping to restore the valley’s natural ecosystems.
We’ll visit three different locations – you can travel independently (car-sharing is recommended) or email project.mahitahi@ncc.govt.nz to reserve a space on a minibus (limited availability – first in first served).

Programme

9.30am - Sunday Hole - Mini-bus pick-up and departure of all vehicles
10 – 11am - Smiths Ford - Pūrākau and Kōrero around pakohe from Ruihana Smith;
Morning Tea + Introduction to ecological restoration in the valley
11am - 12pm - Mahitahi Wetland - Raranga/weaving wananga with Cordelle Rei or
Walk through Project Mahitahi restoration sites with Rod Alexander;
Explore Friends of the Maitai planting site
12 - 1pm - Sunday Hole - Restoration Planting (words from Te Uru Rakau);
Kai (BBQ)

Minibuses will depart Sunday Hole at 09.30am and those coming in their own vehicles may wish to travel together, otherwise pop along to one of the locations in the programme as we acknowledge the Mahitahi as a taonga for past, present, and future generations.

There is no wet-weather date, so please bring weather-appropriate clothing – sunhats/sunscreen or rain jackets! Sturdy footwear is needed if you choose to explore the sites around the Mahitahi Wetland, and bring a water bottle if you wish.
